Not decided on playing Indira: Madhuri Dixit

>> Saturday, November 21, 2009

While the world is abuzz with reports of Madhuri Dixit having been signed on to play Indira Gandhi in Krishna Shah's film on the political icon, the Dhak Dhak woman said she hasn't made up her mind yet.

"Yes, Shah did meet me [at Dixit's residence in Denver, USA], with the script. I read it and I am really impressed with the research he has done. I consider Indira Gandhi my idol, so it would be a privilege to play her.

"But I haven't agreed yet as I need to sort out a lot of other issues. My secretary, Rikku Rakeshnath, is figuring that out." Shah is so keen on casting Dixit that he took a computer imaging of the actress as Indira Gandhi with him when he went to meet her.

Reports of Shah approaching Hollywood stars like Tom Hanks and Tommy Lee Jones for the film are also doing the rounds. The director reportedly plans to approach actor Abhay Deol to play Rajiv Gandhi. Shah himself was unavailable for comment.

Madhuri Dixit looks set to play Indira Gandhi

Actor Madhuri Dixit is likely to essay the role of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in a two-part Hollywood film. It is learnt that Dixit has accepted the part, while filmmaker Krishna Shah is pursuing other big names from Hollywood and Bollywood for the remaining roles.

Actor Tom Hanks has been approached to play the role of US president Lyndon Baines Johnson while Tommy Lee Jones has been offered the part of Richard Nixon, the 37th US president with whom Indira had crossed swords.

Bollywood actors Dharmendra, Abhay Deol and Nana Patekar are being roped in to play Motilal Nehru, Rajiv Gandhi and Jay Prakash Narayan respectively. The movie has been titled Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story.

Known primarily for writing and directing the Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman starrer Shalimar, Shah has interviewed Indira's contemporary politicians, prominent military personnel and even journalists to get in-depth knowledge about her.

"A whole new generation has grown and matured since her assassination and it is the role of art to create the connect between people and their history and legacy. This film will hopefully create such a connection,'' Shah said in a statement.

The pre-production of the movie is complete and it is set to go on the floors mid next year. Slated to be shot in India, UK, USA and Russia, the movie will narrate instances from Indira's birth to the war against Pakistan in 1971 in the first part. The next part will showcase her political career and highlight her relationship with her maverick son Sanjay Gandhi as well as her assassination.

Mads, Ash to judge dance reality show

>> Tuesday, August 11, 2009

If this happens, it will be a coup of sorts. A TV channel is trying to rope in Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Bachchan, two of Bollywood’s most nimble-footed dancers — not to mention gorgeous actresses, to judge a reality dance show.

Talks are on, but their dates have to match, and if it happens... this will be the first time the two divas will be seen again after Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas. Remember their Dola Re performance!

Madhuri, who has been coming on and off to Mumbai for work, leaving her two sons in the care of husband Dr Sriram Nene in the US, may take up this offer. She still remains the dancing diva of Bollywood with no other actress being able to steal the crown from her.

Lake renamed after Madhuri attract tourists, locals unhappy

>> Monday, July 27, 2009

The renaming of a lake close to the Indo-China border in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang valley after actress Madhuri Dixit has attracted many tourists but has been strongly resented by locals led by a Buddhist monk-turned-politician.

The lake, locally known as 'Sho-nga-Tser', has come to be known as Madhuri lake ever since the Madhuri Dixit starrer 'Koyla' was extensively shot in the area around the lake in 1996.

The film, produced by a former Arunachal minister T L Rajkumar, generated a lot of interest in the beautiful lake among tourists, giving rise to increased tourist footfall, but also leading to local resentment.

The new name caught tourist fancy after an enterprising lensman put a photograph of the lake on the Internet.

Monk-turned-politician Rimpoche, a former minister, said he would press the Arunachal Pradesh government to take steps to restore the original name of the lake.

Taking note of the public resentment on renaming of tourist spots in the Buddhist-dominated district by 'outsiders', the state government has made Rimpoche the chairman of a committee to go into the matter as many of the spots have association with religious sentiments.

Rimpoche said the lake was originally a grazing field where people grazed their cattle by paying five coins to the landowner. The lake was destroyed by a powerful earthquake in 1971 and in its place a beautiful lake took shape surrounded by high hills.
This fact was reflected in the name itself. Sho means coins, Nga means five and Tser is grazing ground in the local language, Rimpoche explained.

"How can we allow people from outside to change the name according to their whims just because some popular cine star shot a film in that location?" asked Rimpoche.
He said renaming of some areas by the Army where they have set up camps along the road to the border through the district also needed to be checked.
However, armymen posted near the lake said the renaming of the spot after Madhuri has at least mitigated their loneliness.

"Earlier, we felt very lonely as very few tourists visited the place. For six months the entire area remains under a blanket of snow," an armyman said.

"Hardly any humans were seen here. Now at least 60 to 70 vehicles full of tourists visit the lake every day from September to October. They mostly come from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi and Kolkata mostly," he said.

A former tourism minister of the state, Rimpoche said experts either from within the state or outside will be appointed to suggest measures to revive the cultural heritage of the area.

The experts, he said, would restore original names of of spots in the strategically located Twang valley, an important Buddhist centre and home of the famous 400-year-old monastery.

Rimpoche said there are many more equally beautiful spots in Arunachal, but due to lack of publicity they are unexplored. The area which saw a bloody war with China in 1962 was also kept out of bounds for outsiders, but now as the Army has relaxed the restrictions, there is an increase in inflow of tourists.

Mads: Main Draupadi banana chahti hoon

>> Saturday, May 23, 2009

It’s funny, the buzz was that Prakash Jha’s casting Madhuri Dixit opposite Ranbir Kapoor in a Mrs Robinson kind of role (remember The Graduate?) when, really, the filmmaker is pulling the great actress out of retirement to play Draupadi.

And, there’s likely to be a battle beyond the Mahabharat over this because Rituparno Ghosh is also planning a film on the mythological princess with Bipasha Basu playing the pivotal role.

The talk of Madhuri and her Mrityudand (her single-most important film) director getting together got fans excited. But not for a Ranbir-Madhuri, young man-older woman love story.

Jha, who is bemused by the idea and is working separately with Ranbir on Rajneeti, explained: “I think Ranbir once said he has a crush on Madhuri. Somebody must have put two and two together...”

But it’s been his long-cherished dream to do a film only on Draupadi. A fiercely modern and revisionist interpretation of the Mahabharat. “And Madhuri is the best person for this role,” Jha said firmly. He’s taking up the project full throttle, having fallen by the wayside in his recent attempt to get to Parliament. Madhuri, of course, will be happy to return to Bollywood on a new vehicle after 2007’s fiasco that was Aaja Nacchle.

Aditya Chopra to direct Madhuri in next film

>> Sunday, May 17, 2009

Madhuri Dixit's comeback to the big screen with YRF's Aaja Nachle may not have worked, but the lady is still making a lot of news. Right after I heard she was all set to play the milf in Prakash Jha's adaptation of Lolita with Ranbir Kapoor, a little birdie came and told me some more.

Apparently, Mads was approached by none other than the elusive Aditya Chopra. After DDLJ and Rab Ne... the director is ready to direct his third film. And he wants Madhuri to star in it!

A source tells me, "Last weekend, Aditya was holidaying in the US. Early one morning he approached Madhuri with a bound script at her residence in New Jersey. He started his narration of the script. Madhuri listened to it without a break. She has asked some time to think over it. The film is a women centric romance."

Well, I seriously hope Mads decides to do the film. I sure miss her on the big screen a lot!

Madhuri Dixit celebrates her birthday with son

Madhuri Dixit turns 42 today and she plans to celebrate her birthday in a quiet way with her kids in the US, while her husband is away.

There won’t be any big party for the former Bollywood diva today. The actress will reportedly accompany her elder son Arin for a school visit to a museum. And she will miss her husband who generally surprises her with gifts on birthday.

Yes, Dr. Sriram Madhav Nene, a busy cardiovascular surgeon, is not with his dear wifey today, but Madhuri is expecting sweet surprises from her husband. However, she doesn’t know how he will manage as he is not in town.

Madhuri has plans for an outing this weekend, once her husband is through with his work and is back. She also plans to visit India by first week of June as the vacation of her kids, Arin and Ryan, will start around that time.

The dancing diva who ruled Bollywood for almost two decades is happy and content with her homely life away from the razzle-dazzle of glam world. Like a true Taurean, Madhuri is proud of herself and her decision to settle down in the US rather than continue working in Mumbai.

Madhuri chose a domestic life and started a family at a time when she was the reigning queen of Bollywood. Today, she is all for her family, supportive of her husband’s profession and his odd working hours, her two growing sons who need her at this time. She signifies womanhood in true sense, a lady who swapped her very successful filmy career with a merry married life.

We wish her a happy birthday.

Happy birthday, Madhuri

>> Friday, May 15, 2009

Madhuri Dixit turns 42 today, May 15.

And as we all wish the great actress a very Happy Birthday, here's a look at different sides of Madhuri.

Madhuri, the Girl

A Mumbai girl, Mads was born Madhuri Shankar Dixit in a Marathi Brahman family on May 15, 1967.

Her parents, Shankar and Snehlata Dixit, sent her to Mumbai's Divine Child High School and Mumbai University.

The actress was convinced she wanted to be a microbiologist. But fate had other plans for Madhuri, and was working silently in the background while she learnt Kathak for eight years.

Madhuri made her debut as an actress with Abodh, when she was 17. And there was no looking back.

Madhuri, the Hitmaker

Her blockbuster breakthrough happened four years into her career, with N Chandra's Tezaab. The film earned her massive accolades and her first Filmfare nomination, but also set her up as one of the most screen-dominating actresses of the era. Then came hits like Ram Lakhan, Tridev and Parinda.

Madhuri earned her first Filmfare award for Dil, after which started another string of hits which included Beta, Khalnayak and Saajan. She was one of the biggest stars in the history of Indian cinema, and the only actress who could bring audiences in regardless of the hero -- and her biggest film was still around the corner.

1994's Hum Aapke Hain Koun is one of the biggest Hindi films of all time, and Madhuri Dixit got larger than life with that one.

Madhuri, the Dancer

Not just is Madhuri an accomplished Kathak dancer, but her longtime collaboration with veteran choreographer Saroj Khan made sure she could do her Bollywood thumkas better than any other naach-girl around.

Right from the sexy Dhak dhak to the raunchy Choli Ke Peechhe, from the spunky effervescence of Dil Toh Pagal Hai to modern jazz-style dancing in Pukar, Madhuri's been the industry's primo dancer.

And that Hum Ko Aaj Kal Hai song from Sailaab remains absolutely impossible to forget, as do most of her others.

Madhuri, the Mrs

While at the height of her fame, right before that sensational Kay Sera Sera song from Pukar and after successes like Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Madhuri suddenly bid the arclights goodbye in 1999 to get married and settle down. It was the sort of news that broke the nation's heart.

Married to US-based doctor Sriram Madhav Nene, she and her family now live in Denver, Colorado. Madhuri and Sriram have two sons, Arin and Raayan.

In an industry rampant with affairs and breaking marriages, Madhuri's seems to be the most balanced life.

Madhuri, circa now

Yet the country had been clamouring for a comeback. Madhuri stuck around right after her marriage and made movies like Pukar -- for which co-star Anil Kapoor nabbed a National Award -- and Gajagamini, which was MF Hussain's tribute to Madhuri as an actress and a woman. It was a role no other actress could have done, truly.

Then came films like Lajja and finally 2002's Devdas, where she took Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film to a whole different level with her work as Chandramukhi, the courtesan.

A couple of years back, Madhuri returned to the arclights with Yash Raj Films' Aaja Nachle. The film might not have worked but we all sure loved seeing Mads on screen again -- and we hope she'll be back again soon.

Many happy returns of the day, Madhuri. Have a good year and please let us see you soon.

Madhuri's big day

Today is Madhuri Dixit's birthday and the US-based actress will be with hubby Dr Sriram Nene and her kids on her janamdin.

Buzz in B-Town is that she has been approached for Prakash Jha's film but her manager dismissed it off as a mere rumour.

Meanwhile Jha maintains, "Madhuri is neither working in Rajneeti nor am I planning any film with her." Why? Not good enough for Mads, Mr Jha?

Ram gives me surprise gifts: Madhuri Dixit

Change is the only constant in life, but not many take to change easily. Madhuri Dixit is an exception. Not many years ago, when she was the reigning queen of Bollywood, Madhuri's birthday was celebrated with much pomp and splendour. In stark contrast, on her birthday today, her itinerary only has a visit to the museum nearby with her elder son Arin and his class mates. "A few parents volunteered to go along with the children, and I volunteered too," she says with her famous laugh, talking to After Hrs from the US.

Perhaps no one else has settled into anonymous domesticity better than Madhuri. "I am happy," she says, adding, "I hope to come to Mumbai in the first week of June when the kids get holidays, but I'm not sure yet." A true Taurean, Madhuri says "We Taureans are supposed to be this Rock of Gibraltar and I think that fits me perfectly. I don't let anything affect me too much." So, obviously the absence of mad attention was like raindrops which quickly fell off this 'rock'? "Once we Taureans take a decision, we stick by it, no matter what," she emphasises.

Apart from the visit to the museum, she hopes husband Ram Nene is free to go out this weekend. "He gives me surprise gifts generally, but this time I would be surprised if he manages to give me a gift as he is out of town," she says. "But we will probably go out somewhere during the weekend."

History repeats itself for Madhuri!

>> Thursday, May 14, 2009

Age may be just a number, but Bollywood is cashing in on it big time! These days tinsel town is busy talking about the chemistry between younger heroes and older women. First, we heard of the sweet 'n' surprising Shahid Kapur -Vidya Balan pairing, then Bips created spark with a young Ranbir Kapoor & coupling it with younger Neil Nitin Mukesh . Now we hear, the latest to rejoin the league is the former Bollywood queen Madhuri Dixit

If the current reports are to go by then in her latest venture, Mads is being paired opposite Ranbir Kapoor in director Prakash Jha's next. If this happens history will repeat itself. Madhuri on her part is bound to experience bouts of nostalgia when working with young heartthrob, reminiscing the days when she romanced his papa Rishi Kapoor onscreen while working on films like YAARANA, PREM GRANTH.

And this is not the first time; Madhuri has already shared great onscreen chemistry with both father and son in lead roles & charmed both. Years back she had worked with papa Vinod Khanna in DAYAVAAN and son Akshaye in MOHABBAT (and recently in AAJA NACHLE).

No wonder she is aptly called the eternal 'Dhak Dhak' girl of Bollywood!

We have lost a great personality: Madhuri Dixit

Oh my God! We have lost a great personality and a good human being. My prayers are with his family. Feroz Khan directed me in Dayavaan. He was a wonderful director, much ahead of his time. His style quotient in real life was highly reflected in his films. He would shoot everything with great elan and style. He would allow the actors a lot of creative license, a rare quality I must say. He was a big-hearted Pathan, and I will miss him dearly.

Ranbir to woo Madhuri

>> Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Bollywood's dancing diva Madhuri Dixit will once again be seen on the silver screen. After having won accolades for her performance in her comeback film Aaja Nachle, the actress has reportedly given her nod to director Prakash Jha's next movie.

Madhuri had done a power-packed role in Prakash Jha's Mrityudand earlier and if all goes well then this could be their second outing together.

Currently Prakash Jha is busy wrapping up Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif starrer Rajniti, based on the Indian politics.

Reports suggest that Jha had sent the script to Madhuri , who is in US and Madhuri has really liked the script. According to sources, the film will not be a conventional love story, instead it is about a young man (to be played by Ranbir) besotted by an older woman (Madhuri).
